The impact of Arthrogryposis Multiplex on the beef cattle industry

Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM) is a lethal genetic condition caused by a recessive gene that results in a deletion on two separate genes in Angus and Angus-influenced cattle. Affected calves are known to be still-born with a twisted spine, and extended and contracted limbs. The recessive gene has been traced back to GAR Precision 1680 (dating back to that bull’s maternal grandsire 9J9), a highly influential foundation Angus bull with multiple generations of offspring within the breed today.
